After a season that nearly saw them run undefeated, Nelson Bay have fallen just a single game short of the Black Diamond AFL Womens grand final, kept to a single behind against Wyong Lakes.

The Magpies were in complete control at the No.1 Sportsground as they kept the three-time grand finalists from finding even a single major, recording a low-count 3.1.19 to 0.1.1 win and earn their pathway to the big dance.

Monique Maddalena was key for the Wyong Lakes outfit as she notched two of the club’s three majors, while Alanna Nicholson scored the other six-pointer of the clash.

In the second elimination final of the weekend, the Newcastle City Stars disappointed Killarney Vale at Adelaide Street Oval, winning 8.6.54 to 4.1.25 on Sunday.

Sarah Halvorsen was rampant in the second preliminary final of the weekend, slotting four goals for the Stars, including two in the final quarter, to provide a key difference against the Bombers.

As well as Halvorsen’s four goal haul, Simone Sing, Ashlee Hayllar, Lewis Rose and Kristel Gavenlock all scored.

Courtney Barnett, Jocelyn Kelleher, Tonicah Eslick and Georgia Butler were the Bombers’ scorers.

The Stars and the Magpies will contest the final match of the 2018 season at No.1 Sportsground next Saturday, with the bounce penned in for midday, and the ultimate campaign prize on offer.
