Pippa Smyth was named as the best player in the AFL Sydney Womens competition for 2018.

NELSON Bay’s Pippa Smyth has been named AFL Sydney Womens Best & Fairest player for 2018, after a shining season with the Macquarie University Warriors.

Smyth, who played her first season in the AFL Womens in 2018 with the GWS Giants, appeared in the competition’s best players each round eight times in 17 matches, and even kicked a major against Auburn-Penrith Giants in round five.

Macquarie University are bracing for the AFL Sydney Womens grand final.

The Warriors have had a stellar 2018 campaign, finishing as minor premiers with a 16-1 record, two wins better than the second placed UNSW Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs.

They now brace for one final match against that same team, after punching their ticket straight to the decider with a 4.2.26 to 3.1.19 victory over the Bulldogs in the first week of finals.

The Bulldogs – who claimed back-to-back premiership in 2016 and 2017 – bounced back from that defeat with a 6 point victory over Auburn-Penrith to set up the final rematch this Saturday afternoon.

The AFL Sydney Womens grand final will begin at 12.30pm at the Blacktown International Sports Park.
