Just a week after winning the Melbourne Marathon, Celia Sullohern has claimed silver at the inaugural Commonwealth Half Marathon Championships, with an improved personal best finish time.
Sullohern, who graduated from the University of Newcastle before heading off across Australia to pursue her racing career, called a halt to her timer at the one hour, 11 minute and four second mark to finish second at the 21.1 kilometre title event in Cardiff, Wales.
The result betters Sullohern’s PB by a clear six minutes, and left her just two minutes behind top spot victor Juliet Chekwel, who represented Uganda. Chekwel’s training partner Doreen Chesang finished four seconds behind Sullohern.
The Novocastrian graduate, who is coached by Newcastle Olympian Scott Westcott, enters the annuls of history as the thirteenth fastest half-marathon competitor in the womens category.
