In a slugfest at the Newcastle International Hockey Centre, Souths and The Entrance nearly walked away with a nil-all draw, but for a last minute ‘buzzer-beater’ from Gabby Purcell.

Both goalkeepers stood tall in the conflict, while Brit Mortimer was a key figure for the Devils in their eventual 1-nil victory. Ahead of the final minute, both teams seemed also resigned to the fact they were playing out a goalless game.

Then Purcell, who came on late for the Devils, slotted a bouncing ball into the back of Souths’ goal with just five seconds left on the clock. It was enough to grab all three points for the home Coast side, and put them in the winner’s circle for the first time this season.

Also this round, a severly depleted Regals faced off against a similar stung Oxfords side, with both teams battling to a gritty nil-all finish. Oxfords were in the ascendancy for much of the clash, but Regals’ tight defence kept the game scoreless to the death.

On the Coast, Gosford hosted Central in another low-scoring affair. Representative star Ella Carr scored for the home side, while Jackie McRae featured heavily across the field in the 1-nil victory for City.

Finally, Erina Avoca Beach scored a default 3-nil win after Central were forced to forfeit due to short player numbers on Saturday afternoon.
