University of Newcastle have started their NHCRL Ladies League Tag season off on the right foot, chalking up a landslide 24-nil win over Dora Creek at Neville Thompson Oval.
The Uni ladies found an even spread in their offence, with Amy Byrne, Jessica Murray, Imogen Heap, and Kristina Norton all crossing for four-pointers against the Swampies ladies.
It was Uni no.1 Emma Gallagher that had the biggest impact however, slotting two goals alongside her own try in the opening clash.
The five-try, 24-point win puts Uni atop the NHCRL ladder just a week into the 2019 competition, as the Callaghan-based outfit looks to return to the finals after falling to Aberglasslyn in 2018.
The Ants started their title defence on the right foot as well, defeating Fingal Bay 22-12 thanks to three of four goals slotted by kicker Caitlin Shoulders.
Shae Ross, Lacey Hickson, Emily Bryant, and Fiona Cruise all scored for Aberglasslyn, while Brianna Robinson crossed twice for the Bomboras. Marnie Parfitt slotted both goal attempts.
Finally, Raymond Terrace were the last team to join the winner’s circle, defeating Awabakal 12-6 at Walters Park.
In B Grade, West Wallsend defeated Mallabulla 18-14, Wangi downed Cardiff 26-6, and Tea Gardens edged Swansea 12-6. Finally, Stroud and Shortland played out a 4-all draw in the competition’s C Grade, while Maitland defeated Windale 26-8, and doubles from Amelia Morris and Bethany Marshall guided Dungog to a 38-nil victory over Clarence Town.
A GRADE STANDINGS: University, Aberglasslyn, Raymond Terrace (2), Awabakal, Fingal Bay, Dora Creek (0).
