After a competitive and exciting 2018 season, the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League’s A Grade League Tag competition is set to be decided this Saturday afternoon as two rivals come face to face.
Newcastle University and Aberglasslyn have both been in this position before, as the two all-star squads contested the 2017 final under similar conditions, with the Ants taking out the top spot in a dominant 18-0 victory.
This time, the Seahorses believe they can reverse their fortunes, especially after buying a week off in the play-offs with a 16-8 win over the Ants two weeks ago.
University booked their pathway to the decider in the semi-final rounds, while Aberglasslyn were forced to take on Raymond Terrace last weekend to set up the rematch, although the 28-8 win could be the catalyst the Ants need to swap fortunes from a fortnight ago.
Jess Murray and Niesa Case gave the Seahorses the early lead in the semi-final match, before Jessica Cassidy and Shae Ross crossed for the Ants.
It was a key late try for Rhiannon Chivers that closed the door on Aberglasslyn in that contest, but the Ants will be looking to change the story, especially considering the 8 point defeat with their first loss in two years.
A shining hat-trick performance from Alyssa Shoulders will also lift the spirits of the prestigious squad, alongside last week’s 28-8 preliminary final win.
Aberglasslyn will also be looking to Cassidy for go-forward, after the live-wire tryscorer bagged 20 for the season, including a five-star haul against Tea Gardens in June, and kicked 42 of the team’s 44 goals during the year.
University also have heavy hitters in their amidst, including Case and Jordin Sheaves, who both notched up 10 and 11 tries during the regular season respectively. The Seahorses will also look to Sam Mead, who slotted 25 goals in 11 matches.
The title clash will be played at No.1 Sportsground this Saturday from 10.45am. The match will also be aired on BarTV.
