A week ago Purnells were preparing for their off-season celebrations, having run fifth in the Charlestown top grade. Now, after Watters withdrew from their second place position to keep parity in the elimination rounds, they have taken their second bite of the cherry in both hands.
That second chance nearly saw the squad’s grand final hopes dashed again, as they found themselves down by 6 goals to now-third placed Job Done at the half time break, but a rallying third quarter put them back in the match.
After controlling a 31 to 25 lead at the break, Job Done capitulated their command of the fixture to fall to one goal behind at the end of the third quarter.
From there, a dominant final stanza from Purnells to complete their comeback saw the scoreline drawn at 59-52 to send the lucky losers through to Charlestown’s preliminary finals.
In the other semi-final, Heat kept to the grain with a storming 65-34 victory over second placed Central Crossfire, and booked their ticket straight to the major decider in 2018.
Their eyes will now turn to the last elimination match before the big day, where Crossfire will look to end Purnells’ unlikely run to the grand final from fifth place.
Purnells and Crossfire will now face off at 1pm this Saturday, August 25 on Court 10.
