Newcastle netball superstar Sam Poolman has committed to a further two years with the Giants in the Super Netball, the club confirmed on Tuesday.
Poolman, who has already chalked up 73 caps in her storied career, first joined the national netball competition when it was ANZ Championship. She played four seasons with the Adelaide Thunderbirds before making the switch to Sydney.
Since joining the Giants in 2017, Newcastle’s netball queen has finished twice in the top two, and claimed the minor premiership in 2018 with a 10-1-3 record. She has appeared in one grand final, falling to the Sunshine Coast 65-48.
The Giants had less success in the season just gone, missing out on the playoffs for the first time in Super Netball history on goal difference in the league’s final matchday. They recorded a 5th place finish with a 7-1-6 overall record.
Alongside Poolman’s signature came a raft of other Giants re-signings, including starting seven regulars Kristiana Manu’a and Amy Parmenter, as well as developing starlets Kiera Austin and Matilda McDonnell.

Manu’a was partnered with Newcastle’s star for most of the season, becoming one of the most stable defensive ends in the competition. Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald said she’s “thrilled” to have the defensive pairing return.
Kristiana and Sam were really developing a strong chemistry by the end of the season and I’ve got no doubt that will continue to develop in the coming years,” she said.
“There’s no doubt we were disappointed to miss out on the finals in 2019 but I’m confident that having won four of our last five games and with the majority of our squad returning next season, we are in great shape for 2020.”
The Giants return to the preseason for their 2020 campaign later this year. All teams must have their 2020 rosters finalised by October 14, ahead of the season proper beginning in April of next year.
