Melbourne City have ended the Newcastle Jets’ final hopes with a 4-0 thrashing at CB Smith Reserve, as the southern team looked to stay in the hunt for their own playoffs story in 2019.

The defeat continues a worrying trend for Craig Deans’ outfit – the girls in red and blue have never recorded a victory against City, and the Melbourne squad has scored fifteen goals to the Jets’ three in their last four meetings.

Yukari Kinga opened the scoring off a spenalty – conceded by Cassidy Davis – that Britt Eckerstrom guessed the direction on correctly, but the effort was too strong to stop.

City snagged a second 38 minutes in off a corner whipped in from Elise Kellond-Knight, finding an unmarked Steph Catley who slammed her first W-League goal of the season home with a header.

Melbourne slammed their third home through Kinga, who completed her brace off a Helen Caceres cross that found Theresa Nielsen, and the Dane was able to put City’s double-scorer through on an open net.

City rounded out their four-goal onslaught with a series of quick passes that found Hailie Mace in the centre of the box, and the new signing simply had to tap the ball home to claim Melbourne’s final goal.

The Jets travel to Adelaide next round, while City have the bye.
