Hunter Sports High fell to eventual Bill Turner Trophy victors Westfield Sports High in the semi-final of the competition, bumped out of title contention after a 4-2 penalty shoot-out went against them.
Hunter Sports High had continued a dominant run to make 15 consecutive playoff series in the Bill Turner competition, but couldn’t split the differences in regular time against their rival squad, and went to the shoot-out having scored one goal apiece.
It was a similar pain to the school’s 2017 campaign, as Westfield pipped them at the post with a 6-1 thumping in the title decider.
Mika Moraoly was the lone scorer for Hunter Sports in the final four elimination round, finding the back of the net in the 28th minute.
The Westfield defeat sent Hunter Sports into the third-place playoff match, where they defeated Kelvin Grove State College 4-0.
Brianna Williams opened the scoring in the third minute for the Novocastrian squad, before Lara Gooch bagged one 23 minutes later.
Williams added her second just before the end of the first half, and the four-goals-to-nil victory was rounded out in the 46th minute by Shanti Stuart’s strike.
The Bill Turner Trophy spirit of football award was awarded to Hunter Sports’ Tiahna Robertson.
The Bill Turner Trophy is a high school knock-out tournaments for students 15-years-and-under which commenced in April and includes teams from across NSW and the ACT. 400 teams entered the Trophy’s first stages.
