Merewether board riders were a dominant force in the Newcastle and Mid North Coast Regional Surfing Titles, with club representatives bagging five of the seven divisional titles on offer.

The contest was surfed at Merewether on Saturday and Dixon Park on Sunday, with offshore conditions prevailing throughout, and with waves ranging from two to four feet.

Amelie Burke and Madi Poole led the honour-haul with wins in the under 16 and under 18 girls’ divisions respectively, while Mike Clayton-Brown scored top spot in the under 16 boys.

With five of the seven titles on offer heading back to the city, Surfing Newcastle president Dan Frodsham praised the competition.

“All of the finals were closely contested and the surfers laid it on the line, pushing each other to take the biggest waves and really going for it in the critical sections,” Frodsham said.

Surfing Newcastle also announced the winners of the inaugural NCIG High Performance awards – Merewether’s Amelie Burke was one of two recipients of $500 training and competition scholarships aimed at fostering the region’s young surfing talent.
