University of New England – and the Hunter cohort that fills the team’s ranks – have had a mixed third leg of the AON Uni7s series, collecting sixth place after a 2-2 record across the two day tournament.

UNE started off strongly, grabbing a 22-15 win over University of Tasmania thanks to a double for Nelson Bay star Maya Stewart and another pair for teammate Rhiannon Byers, before falling in a landslide defeat to home team University of Queensland, 40-nil.

Another big defeat at the hands of Griffith University – 36 to 5 with Stewart scoring the team’s lone try – all but locked UNE out of the finals series in Queensland, despite their recovery to score a 31-7 win over University of Melbourne on day two.

Mayfield’s Katrina Barker.

The Hunter cohort and their university team then moved into the fifth place semi-final, where a double and a goal for Stewart, as well as two goals kicked by Mayfield local Katrina Barker, locked in their move to the final, 21-14.

UNE fell at the final hurdle however, with just a single point costing them the fifth place finish against University of Canberra, 21-22.

Barker shone in the final clash, bagging a try and three goals, while Stewart crossed one final time to bring her Queensland haul up to six in as many games.

The Hunter had a decent degree of success at the tournament however, as Layne Morgan finished in third place with University of Macquarie behind Griffiths University and UQ.

The series will continue with the fourth leg, to be hosted on the Gold Coast, before the fifth and final leg travels to South Australia in October.
