Maya Stewart has opened her scoring account for the NSW Waratahs with a brilliant try that saw the Nelson Bay star beat three through the Queensland line to score in the 15th minute.
The first Super W try for the young winger has put the Waratahs in the driver’s seat when it comes to pontentially hosting the competition’s grand final. The side that finishes first hosts the big dance, while second and third play for the right to face them in a newly-introduced playoff clash.
Stewart’s chance nearly didn’t occur at all however, as club captain Ash Hewson danced on the edge of the right-side line before flinging the ball back into the mix to keep the move alive.
NSW then swapped flanks with edge-to-edge passing, before Stewart squared up against Queensland’s defence and muscled her way through the bag the major in her second top-level game.

Queensland had their own chances late, but solid defence from halfback Iliseva Batibasaga saw her bundle up a loose ball in the in-goal area in the final minute to deny a victory major for the travelling team.
Newcastle’s Katrina ‘Cheech’ Barker was also a shining light for NSW in defence, rallying the team with her massive tackles to keep the squad focused when on the back foot in both halves.
The second win for the Waratahs keeps them close to the top of the five-team table, where they sit on 9 points. They have collected 4 points twice with their two wins, and bagged an additional bonus point for their shut-out win in the first round.
NSW now sit in second place, two points behind Queensland who have scored a 2-1 record in their three games played, and collected three bonus points. The Waratahs have a game in hand however.
The Waratahs hit the road next weekend when they take on the Force in Western Australia. Their upcoming opponents claimed a 38-10 win over the Melbourne Rebels in their most recent Super W outing.
