Results from the Newcastle and Hunter Women’s Rugby premiership’s penultimate round has set the league up for a blockbuster final weekend as Merewether Carlton and Easts University continue their tussle to finish in the top four.
Second-placed Hamilton edged finals hopefuls Easts University 27-19 on Saturday afternoon at Bernie Curran Oval as the combined venture celebrated their ladies day.
Darcy Gillett, Nicola Roche, and Brooke Walklate all crossed for the home side, but five tries for the Hawks proved the difference in the clash. Trudi Peterson, Leilani Nathan, Logan Flanagan, Ashley Allen, and Stephanie Hayes all scored for Hamilton.
At Boyd Oval, Medowie welcomed the Blacks for the second-last round of the season. The Marauders fell to another lopsided defeat in their settling season, but celebrated their final home game of the year in style nonetheless.
Finally, Round 14’s run of results saw the league-leading Waratahs down Merewether 28-0 to leave the Greens on 28 points heading into the deciding weekend. Maitland ahead of the fourth-vs-fifth scuffle, while Easts-University lies in wait on 26 points.
All eyes will turn to Bernie Curran Oval next Saturday evening as the Greens and Easts University come face to face. With just two points splitting the two finals hopefuls, the 4.30pm clash could prove decisive in the race for playoffs.
The Waratahs, who claimed the top spot with a runaway undefeated season, and third-placed Maitland will play out their final games of the regular season at Marcellin Park early on Saturday afternoon. The Tahs have won the last two meetings.
Finally, Hamilton host sixth-placed Medowie at Passmore Oval to close out the round. Their 4.30pm kickoff will see the finals-bound Hawks preparing for their postseason, while the Marauders will be celebrating a completed season in the NHWRU.
